About the Author

Karen GatelyKaren Gately is the Director of Ryan Gately, a Human Resources and Organisational Development consulting practice based in Melbourne. She is the author of two people leadership titles, The Corporate Dojo and The People Manager’s Toolkit, to be published by Wiley in 2013. Karen is also a 3rd Dan black belt with Shukokai Karate and holds several state and national titles as both a junior and adult, having trained, competed and taught for over 25 years.

Prior to establishing Ryan Gately, Karen was employed by Vanguard Investments as Human Resources Director for the Asia Pacific region.  Karen joined a fledgling Vanguard in 1998 as Human Resources Manager and over the next 8 years worked to establish Vanguard’s HR capabilities in the region, including Vanguard’s Six Sigma deployment, VUE (Vanguard Unmatchable Excellence).  As a member of the Executive committee, she was responsible for operational and strategic decisions for the company, and led a global team to establish Vanguard’s Global HR Guiding Principles.

Since establishing Ryan Gately in 2006, Karen has worked with organisations both large and small to develop high performance workplace cultures and teams.  Karen works closely with clients to provide coaching, training and HR advice to leaders at all levels of their organisation.  Karen’s philosophy is holistic, with a strong focus on helping leaders to realise the goals and objectives of their organisation by awakening the discretionary effort and creativity of their teams.

Karen holds a Bachelor of Applied Science and a Diploma of Education from RMIT University and a Master of Business (Human Resource Management) from Charles Sturt University.
